Mazas Etudes Op. 36 Book 1 for Violin
Effective violin practice can be a challenge, and often you just wish you had your teacher there to model how it should sound. Am I playing the correct rhythm? Do I have the proper amount of weight in the bow? Articulation? Intonation?
Teachers, do you wish you could be with your students in each practice session to help them have a great practice week and come to lessons having made marked progress?
I am well acquainted with both of these scenarios. So well that it became the focus of my doctoral dissertation and the motivation to produce study aid recordings of the Mazas etudes for violin.
For years in my private studio a pattern continued. The repertoire part of the lesson went well, but progress was slow on the etudes. The reasons were always the same. “I couldn’t remember how it should sound.” “I practiced the wrong rhythm.” “I wasn’t sure of…(insert a hundred other things here!)”
One day a student asked if there were any study aid recordings available. I searched far and wide but found nothing I felt comfortable recommending. It was clear there was not a professionally produced study aid recording of the Mazas Etudes, so I decided to change that.
My students are now making greater progress on the etudes than ever before. I truly feel as if I am able to be with them in their practice sessions during the week. They come to lessons with more of the etude learned, learned correctly, and students have greater sense of accomplishment.
-Dr. Lisa McNiven
The more frequently the students listen to the recordings, the more easily they learn to play. Constant listening to music performed with beautiful tone provides children with a role model for their playing.

As students and teachers spend more time in the modeling process, the rate of learning speeds up, and less verbal instruction is required. Children and students are natural imitators, modeling can greatly affect the quality of learning.

Inviting Facebook friends to the McNiven Adoption 2.0 Facebook event page is one of the best ways to support the cause in addition to purchasing an album and donating. Direct invitations are 10% – 30% more successful than general sharing. This video gives a brief tutorial of how.
Sharing this fundraising page on Facebook is also very valuable for building awareness. This video tutorial explains how.
